Hockney
A campaign to convey the lovable brilliance, quirk and warmth of a documentary about one of the UK’s favourite artists.
Concept
It would have been out of the question to create campaign artwork for the documentary about the life and work of David Hockney that didn’t turn heads.
Celebrating such a creative icon with only a title treatment to work with required comprehensive research, including discussions with the artist.
Drawing on his love of jazz we were inspired to evolve a soulful, charismatic art style that gave the campaign emotion and human connection, at a glance.
Delivery
It was important that this campaign artwork be playful yet direct. Highlighting one eye with askant graphics created a powerfully engaging focus.
With a nod to Blue Note records, the title treatment was layered over blue bars, themselves featuring David Hockney’s most iconic work, A Bigger Splash.
A series of postcards using the artist’s work promoted the live Q&A from LA and allowed us to develop more playful graphics and materials that paid tribute to his work.
